KNOW YOUR FAITH – “Eat with your Family

Eat with your Family not with your Smartphone.” Pope Francis

Pope Francis is urging all families to eat meals together at the table because far too many family members are alienating themselves in their rooms with their Smart phones and not communicating with one another. Here are a few statements he made about this:

A family that chooses to watch TV or play with their smartphones rather than talk at the dinner table is “hardly a family,”

“When children at the dinner table are glued to the computer, or the telephone and do not listen to one another, they are not a family, they are retired,”

“To share a meal — and not just food, but also affection, stories, events — is a fundamental experience.”

Here are some of the benefits of eating a meal together as a family

  • Better academic performance
  • Higher self-esteem
  • Greater sense of resilience
  • Lower risk of substance abuse
  • Lower risk of teen pregnancy
  • Lower risk of depression
  • Lower likelihood of developing eating disorders
  • Lower rates of obesity

When families regularly share meals together, everyone benefits ─ the children, parents and even the community. Making the “Family Table” a priority from an early age can serve as a “vaccine” against many of the harms that come to children from a hurried lifestyle. Jane Anderson MD FCP
